What does what?:
Use the right lights for the right room and purpose and save.
Incandescents:
- the least energy-efficient globes
- cheap to buy but expensive to run
- short life - need to be replaced regularly
- most suitable for areas where lighting is used infrequently and for short periods - maybe the laundry or toilet in your household
Halogens:
- a type of incandescent lamp
- not as efficient as fluorescent lamps but slightly more efficient than old incandescent globes
- often used for downlighting to provide bright pools of light instead of general illumination
- require gaps in ceiling insulation which reduces its effectiveness
Fluorescents and CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps):
- use about a quarter of the energy of incandescent bulbs to provide the same light
- more expensive to buy but much cheaper to run
- long life - last eight times longer than old globes
- ideal for areas where lighting is required for long periods of time, such as the living room and kitchen, as well as for security lighting
- available as fluorescent tubes and CFLs
